JASONSHANGHAIHOMES

Welcome to Huangpu District (黄浦区) — Shanghai’s historic and geographic heart. This is where modern Shanghai began: the Bund’s colonial grandeur, the Old City’s winding lanes, and the glamour of Huaihai Road. At Jason Shanghai Homes, we’ve helped expats find homes in Huangpu for two decades. Here’s your complete guide.

A Brief History

Huangpu contains the Old City of Shanghai, the walled settlement that predates foreign concessions by centuries. The British established their settlement along the Bund in 1843, sparking Shanghai’s transformation into Asia’s greatest trading port. By the 1920s, the Bund was the financial center of East Asia, and neighboring streets were filled with Art Deco banks, hotels, and trading houses.

Today, Huangpu is a UNESCO-worthy collection of architectural styles: Ming dynasty gardens, Edwardian banking halls, Art Deco apartments, and 21st-century towers — all within walking distance of each other.

Neighborhood Breakdown

The Bund (外滩)

The Bund’s waterfront promenade offers the most famous view in China — the Pudong skyline across the Huangpu River. The buildings behind it house luxury hotels (the Waldorf Astoria, the Peninsula), high-end restaurants, and exclusive residences. Living on or near the Bund means being at Shanghai’s most prestigious address.

What to expect: Ultra-luxury serviced apartments, boutique residences in converted heritage buildings. 2-bedroom ¥25,000–60,000+/month.

Best for: Luxury seekers, history buffs, those who want the most iconic Shanghai address.

Xintiandi (新天地)

Shanghai’s most successful heritage preservation project. Traditional shikumen (stone-gate) lane houses were converted into a pedestrian dining and entertainment district, surrounded by luxury residential towers. Xintiandi is where Old Shanghai meets contemporary luxury — cobblestone lanes with designer boutiques, fine dining restaurants, and craft cocktail bars.

What to expect: Premium modern apartments adjacent to heritage lanes. 2-bedroom ¥22,000–45,000/month.

Best for: Professionals who want the ultimate Shanghai lifestyle — dining, entertainment, and culture at the doorstep.

Huaihai Road / Middle Huaihai (淮海中路)

Shanghai’s most famous shopping street outside of Nanjing Road, but with more character. The section between South Huangpi Road and South Shaanxi Road is lined with department stores, international brands, and the famous IAPM Mall. Behind Huaihai Road, the residential lanes are classic Former French Concession — plane trees, Art Deco, and lane houses.

What to expect: Mix of modern apartments and FC character properties. 2-bedroom ¥18,000–35,000/month.

Best for: Urban professionals who want shopping, dining, and FC charm in equal measure.

South Bund / Laoximen / Dapuqiao

The southern and western portions of Huangpu offer more value while retaining central access. Dapuqiao (打浦桥) features the popular Tianzifang arts enclave. Laoximen (老西门) offers easy Metro access (Lines 8/10) and a more local feel. Properties here are often newer builds or renovated walk-ups at more accessible prices.

What to expect: Modern compounds, renovated apartments. 2-bedroom ¥12,000–22,000/month.

Best for: Value-conscious expats who still want central location. Young professionals.

Ruijin Road / Sinan Road (瑞金路 / 思南路)

The crown jewel of Huangpu’s French Concession. Sinan Road is one of Shanghai’s most beautiful streets, lined with 1920s mansions (including Sun Yat-sen’s former residence) and plane trees that form a complete canopy in summer. Ruijin Road offers a similar ambiance with more residential options and excellent dining.

What to expect: Character apartments, lane houses, premium compounds. 2-bedroom ¥16,000–32,000/month.

Best for: Architecture enthusiasts, those seeking the most beautiful residential streets in Shanghai. Culture lovers.
